History

Our History
In 1995, after many residents and numerous business owners and representatives of local service agencies and organizations had expressed a serious concern about the high incidence of crime in the Southeast Vancouver area, a group of them got together to establish a non-profit charitable organization to formally and proactively address safety and crime related issues in the community.

In Early 1996, the Fraser Street Community Crime Prevention Society was formed and the Board of Directors and volunteers opened an office at 51st and Fraser Street. In 2000, pressured by a limited office space, rising rental cost and the demands of an increased service area, the Board pursued and secured a more affordable and more central location at 41st and Victoria Drive.

After the move, to be more in keeping with the geographical area the Centre serves, the name of the organization was changed to South Vancouver Community Crime Prevention Society, which is now operating as the South Vancouver Community Policing Centre at 5657 Victoria Drive. The premises are leased by the City of Vancouver, and subleased by the Society for a 10 year fixed, plus 5 year renewable term. Since the fixed portion of that sublease is due to expire at the end of this year, in 2009 the organization will be seeking to secure the 5 year sublease option in a contract with the City of Vancouver.

The organization is also very fortunate to have the use of approximately 1000 square feet of free storage space (for such items as bikes, equipment and supplies), provided by the management company of a neighbouring condominium building. Having access to this additional space is essential for the delivery of SVCPC patrol programs.
